A selection of prints from a series we did called “The Skipping Rope.” The inspiration and namesake for the series is a painting by Polish artist, Zbysław Marek Maciejewski, titled “Skakanka” (The Skipping Rope), which shows a little girl jumping rope in front of a roaring tiger. It was a painting that totally fascinated the two of us when we saw it Poland.

In doing the series, we built a fable, piece by piece, around the beautiful, intriguing scene Maciejewski created so many years ago. The story we created pays homage to “Skakanka” and uses it as a point of origin for a fairy tale told in two parts, from two points of view—one from the little girl, who we fashioned into a sort of supernatural force in our story, and one from the viewpoint of a tiger cub’s mother. We printed the pieces with archival inks on canvas, framing one half of the story and mounting the other pieces onto blocks of wood, incorporating vector-based illustration and holga photographs.
