Los Angeles-based author Christina Garner asked us to create a distinct, cohesive visual theme for her young adult fantasy series, The Gateway Trilogy.

At the time we were brought onto the project, Christina had written two of the three books for the series, both of which made use of some very general visuals that she felt didn’t do much to make the work stand out in an increasingly dense field.

We helped Christina comb through hundreds of options for models to portray the books’ protagonist, Ember, taking into account the already existing descriptions of the character while keeping in mind that we would want to portray three continually evolving personas for the three book covers.

Once we found our model and zoned in on the style for the art, we brought in the gateway symbol we designed for Christina—which plays heavily into the plot of the books—and shot original photography for three sets of airy, movement-oriented photo collages we created. In addition to the gateway symbol and book covers, we also designed some promotional bookmarks for the Trilogy.
